Ok, i've taken off the valve cover, and inspected everything. The rockers aline with the valves very well, the cam lobes are perfect, there is no evidence of scoring on the shaft or lobes, and the chain is tight. Now, I went ahead and checked the alignment of the camshaft at TDC. At TDC, the end of the camshaft(two notches) should be horizontal with the top of the case(with the camshaft end cap off), and the hole for the sprocket set pin should be at 1 O'clock. I placed the crankshaft at TDC and to my surprise, the two notches are slightly off(the forward notch is slightly higher than the aft notch). Could this slight misalignment be the cause of the tapping noise? I believe it would cause my valves to open later, but i am unsure of the problems that may arise because of this. I will attempt to get a better alignment here. I did notice that the new oil that i put into the engine is already beginning to deteriorate! It is no longer that nice golden color, and i've not run the engine much at all.
Once again i thank everyone for the free advice.:)
